Prune flower blooms in April. At this time of the year, California’s orchards are painted in immaculate white. Prune grows quickly throughout the summer, absorbing all the gifts of nature, and reach full maturity in August, when its color changes to a deep reddish purple. Out of these ripe Prunes, only lusciously colored, firm fruits of high quality are selected, washed using springwater, and dried, to finally become MIKI Prune.
Part of the Elegant Rose Family
Prune is a tall deciduous tree of the rose family, a species of plum. Among these species, especially those which have fruits that are purplish-colored and edible as dry fruit in particular, are called “Prune”. Prune tree exceeds a height of 5meters, has a beautiful spread of branches and white flowers resembling those of the ume trees. Prune does not self-pollinate, and bears fruit with bees acting as intermediaries. The fruit is the size of a baby’s fist. The pulp is thick, and the seed small in comparison, with a characteristic fragrant scent.

After the discovery of the American Continent, Prune was taken to America by European immigrants. In 1855, the Frenchman Luis Perrier planted Prune in California. Later, after many years of cultivation in a joint research by the US Department of Agriculture and the University of California, present California Prune was born.
A 2000 Year-old History
According to the book “Natural History ” written by the scholar-politician Pliny, Prune was already being cultivated at the beginning of the Roman Empire. Prune not only has the delicious sweet taste, but also the excellent shelf life. Prune was an important storage food.
